The Struma Tragedy of the Holocaust. Two it
The "Struma" Tragedy of the Holocaust. Two items: 1) Broadside issued Feb. 25, 1942, 4 1/4 x 6, in Hebrew, stating that Reuters News reports loss of the ship Struma carrying 769 Romanian passengers attempting to escape from the Nazis. An explosion aboard the ship resulted in death of all but one person. The ship had been refused entry at Istanbul two months before. Over one hundred children were among the lost. 2) Separate original drawing, in pencil, of the Struma, 6 1/2 x 8 1/4 , showing the ship attempting to escape from Nazis, being blocked from reaching shore of Palestine by Sir H. MacMichael, British High Commissioner. Captioned in English and Hebrew, "The Common War Effort." Following this tragedy, the British stopped exile of illegal refugees. Both on toned paper, the latter showing original folds. Rare Holocaust-related pair.
