(20th Century Fox, 1965) Frustrated by the rigid standards and institutional-styled uniforms which her employer imposes upon his children now in her care, Julie Andrews’ Maria creates carefree and happy clothing for each of her young charges from the floral drapery in her room. These become key signature outfits in the storyline, enabling Maria to open up the world to the children, and encompass the “Do-Re-Mi” musical number, plus the bicycle ride and the humorous boat capsizing. Each of the three costumes in this collection represents the entire “drapery fabric” portion of the individual outfits, as plain fabric shirts, shorts, etc. (not included here) rounded out their ensembles in the film. Dorothy Jeakins was nominated for best color costume design for this film. Boy’s suspender-shorts labeled by Western Costume as “Nicholas Hammond” (Friedrich Von Trapp); boy’s shirt has Western Costume sewn-in label without performer name (worn by Duane Chase); Girl’s dress has Western Costume sewn-in label “Louisa” and “SOM” (for Sound of Music, worn by Heather Menzies). All are in Excellent condition as screen-worn with only hints of aging.
