Gary Robert Melvin b. 1950, Rapid City, SD Gary was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He began drawing and painting as a child. In high school he was an active member of the Dakota Artists Guild and the Black Hills Art Association. He majored in Fine Arts at the University of North Dakota where one of his instructors was the noted American artist, Brian Paulsen. His planned art career was interrupted by the Vietnam War where he served as a Hospital Corpsman. Upon release from the Navy, he was accepted to Medical School and embarked on a 35 year career as a physician. During this time, he never exhibited his work and was not active in the art community. He did do a limited number of commissions, including art for medical schools and work for the U.S. Navy and the Veterans Administration. In 2004 he was able to limit his medical practice and began creating art in earnest. He attended painting workshops in Laguna Beach and Scottsdale. He studied intensively with the renowned English artist, Paul Abbott during the next three years. In 2006, Gary entered his first art competition since college, where his oil painting, "The Farrier," won first place in the Arizona Visions Competition. Gary retired from medicine in 2006 and now paints full time in his Prescott, Arizona studio. He is a contributing artist to the "Territorial Times" periodical and also spends time as the drawing instructor at the Ecosa Institute. His work can be found in collections in North America, Europe and Asia.
