The Simon Michael Estate Auction

Auction Details

Join us Saturday August 2nd for the public auction of the estate of the late Simon Michael, noted Texas artist. Considered the Grandfather of the Rockport Art Community, and was influential throughout South Texas as an artist, teacher, and philosopher. Settling in Rockport in 1948, he started the Simon Michael School of Fine Art. Teaching and mentoring young artists all over the Coastal Bend, including Dalhart Windberg. Notable colleagues such as Lincoln Borglum, who had completed the Mt. Rushmore work begun by his father, became dear friends of Michael because of his unique approach to teaching. "Don't paint pictures," Michael is quoted as saying, "paint experiences." The Coastal Bend College's permanent art gallery is named after Michael, (The Simon Michael Art Gallery at Coastal Bend College), and Rockport Center for the Arts exhibited a retrospective of his work in 2006. This auction will consist of the contents of the Simon Michael Art Gallery in Rockport, featuring a life-long collection of works spanning his entire career, plus works from other listed artists. The collection includes hundreds of Michael's original paintings as well as original works by other noted artists such as Gustav & Lincoln Borglum (carvers of Mt. Rushmore fame), old Frederic Remington bronzes, early French bronzes & more from a noted Texas artist & teacher's lifelong collection.
