The Shanghai Gesture Original Gambling House Concept Drawing
"The Shanghai Gesture" (1941) was a massive hit on Broadway, what with its frank sexuality. It took place in a gambling-house/brothel in Shanghai, and followed the adventures of Poppy (Gene Tierney) who found herself in a world that she becomes intertwined in, and like a Chinese finger-toy finds virtually impossible to escape. When it was translated to film in 1941, some of the steamer aspects were "cleaned" by famous director Josef von Sternberg, but not by much, and it became a true cause célèbre when released. As in the play, the gambling house, owned by "Gin Sling" (Ona Munson) becomes the main character in the story, which revolves around revenge and redemption. This is a charcoal pencil concept drawing of t he outside of the gambling house, created for the production designers. A beautiful work of art on its own, made especially collectable because of the film it comes from. Drawing is approx. 26"x18".
