Gronovius, Joh. Fredericus. DE SESTERTIIS SEU SUBSECIVORUM PECUNIAE VETERIS GRAECÆ & ROMANÆ LIBRI IV... Amstelodami: Apud Ludovicum & Danielem Elzevirios, 1656. Small 8vo [17 by 11.5 cm], early light-brown quarter calf and decorative boards; spine ruled and decorated in gilt; two black morocco spine labels, gilt. (24), 915, (41) pages; title printed in red and black; woodcut device on title; woodcut headpieces, tailpiece and initials. Binding a bit rubbed, but sound and rather attractive. Untrimmed. Fine. The second edition of this scholarly treatise on ancient money, first published in 1643. Considerably more rare than the 1691 third edition. Babelon 90: “Extensive knowledge and well-reasoned criticism are in abundance in De sestertiis, by Johann Frederik Gronovius (b. Hamburg 1611 † Leiden 1674), published in 1643. It contains a detailed study of both coin inscriptions and the ancients’ method of counting money, and is still consulted by modern scholars.” Dekesel G162. Hirsch 53. Lipsius 161.
