The Searchers (Warner Brothers, 1956). Half Sheet (22 The Searchers (Warner Brothers, 1956).
The Searchers (Warner Brothers, 1956). Half Sheet (22" X 28"). Widely considered the greatest Western ever made, John Ford integrated character psychology and social relevance into Technicolor spectacle, merging the personal themes to come in the cinema of the 1970s with the epic filmmaking common in the 1950s. This half sheet showcases the film's perfect balance: a glorious golden dusk in Monument Valley runs over a cursive scawl that reads and rereads like the thoughts of a madman, "he had to find her..." Such obsession lies at the core of the film, in John Wayne's five-year search that alienates him further from those around him, in his fixation with the hatred that fuels his revenge rather than with the hope for his niece's rescue. Wayne's antihero was not only an aberration in his career -- he named it his favorite role -- but also a rare revision of the genre and a tonic for the mythologizing of heroes in post-war America. The poster, though, also serves as a reminder of just how aesthetically pleasurable the film is, and in this excellent condition -- restoration has repaired pinholes in the corners and edge wear -- it would display beautifully. Very Fine+ on Paper.
