The Russians Are Coming Walt (Carl Reiner) Toupee
in 1966, during the height of the "Cold War", "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" burst onto our movie screens. In fact, it is constantly on the list of one of the greatest American Comedies of all time (and won many awards including a Golden Globe as Best American Comedy of the Year). An all star cast tells the story of a Russian Sub that runs aground off the coast of a sleepy tiny New England town, with obvious hysterical hysteria for all involved. Leading the pact is Walt Whittaker (Carl Reiner), whose house is "invaded" by Soviet Sailors, and who must try and convince the town of the invasion, then help to stop another World War! The legendary Reiner is well known for wearing toupees in most of his more "romantic" roles, and only going naturally bald when playing characters. In fact an entire episode of his classic "Dick Van Dyke" TV show was based on Laura accidently telling the world that Reiner is bald and wears a series of toupees! This is a rare and wonderful piece of movie memorabilia: Carl Reiner's Hero screen worn toupee custom made and hand crafted for him by Max Factor Studios in Hollywood specifically for his role in "The Russians Are Coming". It is exquisitely made of real human hair, each strand of hair hand woven, and sits on the orignal equally rare original headpiece. It still is stored in the original Max Factor Studios of Hollywood box with "Carl Reiner" written on the side. It comes from the personal collection of Special Effects Artist Andrea Le Vine, and includes a Letter of Provenience from Ms. Le Vine. Looking at it, you can just hear Oscar nominated Alan Arkin and his fellow Russian Sailors shouting the iconic famous phrase: "Emergenzee-emergenzee-everybodiezz to get from Streeeeet!" (Original Max Factor box shows signs of wear).
