The Roll Call, A Masque Of The Red Cross. (x2) The Roll Call, A Masque Of The Red Cross
The Roll Call, A Masque Of The Red Cross (Lot of 2) 32" x 19" Artist: Arnold Genthe. The second set of wonderfully simplistic poster which has a somber and deep feel to it. It depicts a lone figure, draped solely in white, reaching up towards the red cross logo. The background is completely black and the figure stands out in stark contrast. The use of word "masque" in the title is somewhat ironic since traditionally a masque was a lavish form of entertainment in 16th and 17th century aristocratic societies in Europe. They normally involved lavish and decadent set designs and over-the-top costumes. Whereas, here we see a solitary figure on a black background emoting a sense of minimalistic calm. Ben Jonson was the foremost composer of masques in 16th century Europe. One of his works contains the lines "Her treading would not bend a blade of grass, Or shake the downy blow-ball from his stalk!" -From The Sad Shepherd. This lonely figure treads lightly in her masque, though it is not a masque of traditional form! Her pose clearly reminiscent of the great Isadora Duncan, who may have been the inspiration for this poster or pose. A beautiful poster for any collection! <r<r Condition: Poster 1-Good; cockling from severe fold memory, hard crease on y-axis, dirt stains and residue on upper edge, smoke damage on lower left corner. <r<r Poster 2-Superior; dirt stains and residue on lower edge.
