The Punishments of China Illustrated 1801 [I]The Punishments of China
The Punishments of China Illustrated by Twenty-Two Engravings with Explanations in English and French. (London: William Miller, 1801), first edition, 22 hand-colored stippled engravings by Dadley after illustrations by George Henry Mason, 22 pages of explanatory text by William Miller, full leather with gilt decorative border and raised bands on spine, folio (11" x 14.25"), marbled endpapers. A fascinating look at the Chinese code of penal laws that had a punishment appropriated for every crime. The titles of the engravings include "The Manner of Beheading," "Hamstringing a Malefactor," and "Burning a Mans Eyes With Lime." Light occasional foxing, some wear to the covers, otherwise a fine copy.
