The Property of the Boswell Family, Washington, DC:CAST COADE STONE, "Coade, London, 1793". The head of a young woman in relief, (chipped nose) - height: 10 in. (25 1/2 cm.). PROVENANCE: Coade stone is an artificial stone developed in the later 18th century to produce sculptured figures,reliefs and ornaments. Eleanor Coade established the business in Lambeth in 1769. This stone was removed from a house at 622 18th St., N.W., Washington, D.C., built in 1800 by a Dr. Elzey. The house was used as a young ladies seminary for many years. Salmon P. Chase was a professor there in 1820.
