The Property of the Boswell Family, Washington, DC:A PAIR OF CAST IRON GATES, American, circa 1850. Each cast with molded scroll and acanthus fronds, (old repairs) - 36 in high x 38 in wide. PROVENANCE: The gates stood before a house on 205 and 207 Minnesota Row, associated with many well-known Washington political figures. The house was originally built by Senator Stephen Douglass about 1850 and later occupied by Senator John Cabell Breckenridge, also Vice President to James Buchanan. Breckenridge left Washington at the outbreak of the Civil War to serve as a Confederate General. The house was then confiscated and used as a soldier's convalescence home. It was later occupied by Ulyssess S. Grant during his presidency when the White House was under renovation. Other occupants were General Sherman and Matthew G. Emery, a Mayor of Washington, D.C. The house is photographed in "Washington, Past and Present, A History," edited by John Clagett Proctor, 1930, Vol 1, page 124A.
