The Property of the Boswell Family, Washington, DC:A FEDERAL CARVED FIREPLACE SURROUND, Washington City, early 19th century. The shaped overhanging mantel with molded and carved edge above bandings of diamonds, dentil molding and ovals, the frieze centers a bowed panel flanked by two carved radiating ovals enclosed by similarly carved upper stiles raised on free-standing fluted colonettes with on plinth base - 58 1/2 in high x 77 in wide. Provenance: This fire surround came from the Fry Family of Capitol Hill in Washington City. The Fry family were multi-generational carpenters who worked the Capitol in the early years of the 19th century. Oral tradition associated with this surround is that it is believed to have been removed circa 1820 during the restoration of the Capitol, at which time it was damaged in a fire. The surround was acquired by the Boswell Family in the 1920's from members of the Fry family, which the former always referred to it as the "Bulfinch" mantle. Charles Bulfinch was the Architect of the Capitol during the renovation of the new Capitol.
