Featured in this lot if a First Edition of, "The Original Water-Color Paintings by John James Audubon for The Birds of America" Two Volumes, American Heritage Publishing Co., 1966, Slipcase with gold gilt title label, Illustrated with 431 colour plates. Reproduced in Color for the first time from the collection of the New York Historical Society. John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a French-American self-trained artist, naturalist, and ornithologist. His combined interests in art and ornithology turned into a plan to make a complete pictorial record of all the bird species of North America. His famous Birds of America stands out as Audubon's crowning achievement, considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. The 453 life-sized paintings of North American birds were remarkable for their accuracy of color and realism. The blue cloth bound gold gilt stamped hardcovers are in nice condition, slight scuffing to edges noted, fading exhibited to covers. Intact pages text is clean and unmarked, binding tight, slip case exhibits scuffing, soiling and staining. Books approximate measure 10.75"W x 13.5"L x 1.25"D each, slipcase is 11"W x 14"L x 3"D.
