(Disney, 1937) Original storyboard production drawing by Gustaf Tenggren featuring the ducklings from the Silly Symphony cartoon The Old Mill, showing them quacking during sunset and huddled together during the raging storm. Signed in the lower right, “Tenggren.” Accomplished in graphite on 11.75 x 9.75 animation paper. Mounted, cloth-matted, and framed to an overall size of 20 x 18. In very good to fine condition, with wear to borders. A noted Swedish-American artist, Tenggren was a chief illustrator for The Walt Disney Company in the late 1930s before moving on to work on children’s Little Golden Books. Some of the films he worked on were Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi. This storyboard represents the storm section of The Old Mill—the high point of the short—when the animals encounter a thunderstorm that nearly destroys their habitat. It was innovative in that it was the first film to use Disney’s multiplane camera as a test for use in Snow White. Considered one of the great short cartoons ever made, The Old Mill won the 1937 Academy Award for Best Short Subjects: Cartoons. In addition to the cinematic importance of this storyboard, Tenggren’s artwork is highly sought after in its own right.
