The Old Man by Virgil Finlay.
American. 1914 to 1971. SLR. Virgil Finlay is considered to be one of the most popular interior illustrators to work in science fiction magazines. His work appeared in American Weekly, Amazing Stories, Famous Fantastic Mysteries and other titles. Some of Finlay's large abstract paintings were displayed in the Library of Congress and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His method, influenced by the art of Gustave Dore, was to use a lithographic pen and ink to produce stipple art, or a dotted photographic effect. In this mixed media painting against a turquoise ground, Finlay portrays an elderly bearded man reading a book. After World War II, Finlay had converted to Judaism. His new faith was distinctively reflected in this artwork. Liner of frame is soiled in a few spots. Condition (Excellent). Size Framed: 26 - 1/4'' x 22 - 1/2''.
