The company was incorporated in 1837 and authorized by the Maryland legislature under and act passed March 12, 1838. Originally established by Benjamin Howell, an Englishman, the company grew to be a highly successful operation. It constructed the Mount Savage Iron Works producing about 200 tons of iron a week. Additionally, the company built the Mount Savage Railroad which connected Cumberland to the B & O Railroad. At the time, it was the only company in the United States producing heavy railroad iron.
