Man With the Golden Arm (United Artists, 1955). Half Sheet (22" X 28"). In 1955, for almost 25 years, the production code had successfully regulated content in Hollywood films, but American culture, and the movie industry itself, was in the midst of a sea change. Director Otto Preminger prepared to release this film without a seal, so the board relented and allowed films to confront topics like prostitution, abortion, and the subject of Preminger's film, drug addiction. Frank Sinatra stars as Frankie Machine, ace card dealer and recovering drug addict. Released from prison, he is determined to go straight, but when old forces lead him back to temptation, will he surrender to habit? Or will Kim Novak help him stay clean to pursue his dream of drumming? Sinatra earned an Oscar nomination for his performance, a role originally offered to Marlon Brando. Even in the poster he has a haunted look to him which fits the jagged art designed by, as with many of Preminger's productions, Saul Bass. The poster wrinkles around the folds, with tape stains in the corners and a few abrasions in the image area. Very Fine-.
