Original brown blind-stamped cloth, with gold-stamped front cover title, lettered in gilt. Considered one of the most important works of California history and the first of many books on Marshall. Essential for the study of the Bear Flag Revolt and the gold discovery in California. Close to an autobiography, it was written as a defense, a vindication, and in part a memoir of Marshall, who published the volume in an attempt to secure a pension for his services as a gold discoverer.
