The famous Buffalo Nickel was first issued in 1913. The original version of the nickel depicts the bison on the reverse of the coin, standing on raised ground. A later version shows the buffalo standing above a straight line. The buffalo was modeled after "Black Diamond" who was a popular inhabitant of the New York Zoological Gardens. Mint designer James E. Fraser, modeled the obverse image of a proud Native American from three different Indians. * No Buffalo Nickels were struck in 1922, 1932, or 1933. The last date of issue was 1938. Very nice coins, better than average circulated. * * The dates are as follows: 1918, 1920, 1921, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931-S, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938. * Certificate of Authenticity is from American Historic Society.
