The Lady Eve (Paramount, 1941). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Preston Sturges wrote and directed this wicked comedy about the battles waged by men and women. Only in a Sturges' film would the romantic leads be an ophiologist (Henry Fonda, a snake expert) and a card shark (Barbara Stanwyck). They fall in love despite an ongoing con, jump out of love over a misunderstanding, then stumble back in love -- despite an ongoing revenge plot. The barbed humor sprung from Sturges writing the script while awaiting his third divorce, and most of his relationships ended because of his inability to resist the temptation of other Eves' apples. Professional restoration has repaired a few pinholes, border tears and wear in the corners; the card looks terrific now, the best in the set perfectly encapsulating the sexual dynamics between Stanwyck and Fonda and all men and women and the inevitable bites they take. Fine+.
