Sotheby & Co. THE PALACE COLLECTIONS OF EGYPT. CATALOGUE OF THE HIGHLY IMPORTANT AND EXTREMELY VALUABLE COLLECTION OF COINS AND MEDALS, THE PROPERTY OF THE REPUBLIC OF EGYPT. Cairo, Feb. 24-Mar. 6, 1954. Crown 4to, later green cloth, gilt; original printed front card cover trimmed and mounted. 306, (6) pages; 2798 lots; 37 plates, all but the last double-plates. Extensively annotated and partly named, with notations being most extensive in the U.S. sections of the sale. Original prices realized list and other mailings laid in. Very good or better. A great copy of the famous sale catalogue of the legendary coin collection formed by King Farouk. This copy bears the name and the Cairo address of Anwar Maher Farrag in both English and Arabic, though we have been unable to learn anything about him. He does not seem to have participated in the sale, but the annotations show evidence of this copy being used by someone to calculate possible bids ahead of the sale and also to record information during the sale itself. The annotations are most extensive in the sections offering U.S. coins, but are not exclusive to them, and often record the buyer of a given lot as well as other information including comments on the coins being offered (“proof,” “Pittman recommend,” “not the best,” “scratches,” “beautiful, sharp,” “good lot to buy,” etc.). A very interesting copy. Clain-Stefanelli 8013*.
