1906, Kansas. Stock certificate for forty five shares. Orange / Black. Vignette of a locomotive at top center. Issued to “C.C. Orthwein,” and signed on verso by CHARLES CLEMMENS ORTHWEIN (1869 - ? ) American businessman. Perforation cancellations do not affect Orthwein’s signature. Charles C. Orthwein was a partner in the grain exporting firm of C.F. Orthwein & Sons, which principally focused on the exporting of grain via the Gulf of Mexico. Conceived in 1900 by A.E. Stilwell, the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway was the predecessor to the Chihuahua al Pacifico railroad in Mexico. In the wake of a 1912 bankruptcy, the AT & SF acquired the line in 1928, largely in order to gain access to the west Texas old fields.
