Extremely scarce album cover proof of never-produced artwork for the Jimi Hendrix Experience's 1968 album Smash Hits, measuring 24.5 x 17.75, featuring an image of the band on horseback. The proof has color bars along the top and a Warner/Reprise logo at the bottom. This was the original artwork planned for Hendrix's third album (released only four months after Axis, Bold As Love). However, at some point a decision was made to scrap this artwork in favor of a multiple exposure photograph of Jimi alone. On the original US release, a poster using a cropped version of this photograph was included with the initial copies. This is one of a few proofs produced by Hendrix's label Reprise/Warner Bros. They were discarded by the label in the early 1970s and rescued from the dumpster by an enterprising employee. In fine condition. A compilation of singles by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Smash Hits peaked at #4 on the British album chart and #6 on the Billboard 200. An incredibly desirable piece of alternative pre-production cover art. In 2016, a 5000-copy limited edition reissue of Smash Hits was issued for ‘Record Store Day’ using this artwork; the reissue was produced using a scan of the alternate cover provided by the consignor.
