This incredibly beautiful and original watercolor has combined a very traditional way of working with an ancient Japanese art form known as sumi-e. Sumi-e essentially means black ink painting, meant to be simplistic, elegant, and serene. More often than not, a limited amount of brushstrokes are used to communicate the essence of the subject, its spirit. This particular style of painting can be seen here in the stalks and leaves of the flowers; simplistic and yet powerful. The irises are absolutely stunning in their depiction, with the variations of colors that have spread out on the paper, staining the delicate petals attractive hues of purples, blues, and white. In addition, there is a Japanese seal in the lower right hand corner of the painting. Seals are used to complete a composition by causing a balancing effect and giving added meaning to the piece. The seals are always done in red and white to offer contrast to the painting and also to draw the viewer?s eye. While there are name seals, this particular seal is known as a mood or message seal, which is used to express thoughts, reflections, poetry, and idioms. This authentic Japanese seal translates into the English word contemplation. On the back of the painting is a wonderful reflection on the iris by Ho-o, which sums up the painting very effectively, ?The iris standing in the marsh so blue.
