The History of the Inquisition by Charles Dellon [I]The History of the Inquisition
The History of the Inquisition As it is Exercised at Goa. By Monsieur Charles Dellon (London: 1688), 70 pages, no wraps, 12mo (6.25" x 7.75"). The translation information is found in the first few introduction pages. This booklet was written in direct defiance of the oath of secrecy required by the Tribunal. Dellon was a French doctor who was arrested and imprisoned for three years. During his three year term in the cells and dungeons of the inquisition, he gathered material which would later inspire this booklet, and fuel the struggle against intolerance during the Enlightenment period. The Goa province was one of the three Portuguese provinces in India, and had the reputation of being the most cruel and fervent during the Inquisition. A wonderful booklet which provides eyewitness insight into one of the darker times in world history. It was so controversial and factual that it was placed on the Church's banned books list in 1690.

The booklet is in fair condition; disbound; no wraps; edges show minor wear; slight soiling of the pages.
