The Green Mile Mr. Jingles - Marsh Wheeling Cigar Box Prop
The Green Mile Mr. Jingles - Marsh Wheeling Cigar Box Prop "The Green Mile" (1999) was based on Stephen King's brilliant novel which was a protestation of the Death Penalty. Played out like classic Opera, this magnificently realized emotion roller-coaster ride of a motion picture starred Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan. Perhaps one of the most beloved sub-plots involved inmate Eduard Delacroix (Michael Jeter), who befriends a mouse in his cell. He names it Mr. Jingles, and proceeds to train it to do "circus act" quality tricks. He keeps Mr. Jingles in a Marsh Wheeling cigar box. The mouse and the cigar box both become a powerful reoccurring symbol of much needed love, loyalty and hope in the film. In fact, the very last shot in this masterpiece is a close-up of Mr. Jingles sleeping peacefully in the cigar box in Delacroix's bedroom. A beautiful moment of the simple gift of freedom. The prop department created many versions of the Marsh Wheeling cigar box. This is one of these screen used boxes. Specifically, this box was used in the scene where the guards are rehearsing an electric chair execution. Death Row Prison Guard Brutus Howell (David Morse), brings the cigar box in (with Mr. Jingles inside), followed by Delacroix. An interesting detail is that the inside of the lid (which is not seen in the sequence) shows the price of the cigars as 8 cents. It was discovered during production that the actual price at the time the film is suppose to take place was 5 cents. Therefore this prop was used only for showing the outside of the box. To keep continuity, the prop department put a special stamp on the lid that says: "New Price", so that the interior of the lid would not be photographed. The lid has separated from the box, and the two blue "tobacco sales tax" labels have been removed. For those who love this classic movie, the Wheeling cigar box is one of the all time great pieces of memorabilia.
