The Graduate (Embassy, 1967). Banner (24" X 80"). With this film, a new type of leading man emerged. The casting choice of Dustin Hoffman over Robert Redford epitomized the counterculture's turn from take-action icons like Cary Grant. Neuroses became the new machismo, passive protagonists the dominant screen hero, and film style reflected this externalization of inner anxieties. Director Mike Nichols mined devices from the French New Wave -- jittery camerawork, askew angles and jumpy editing all broke the traditional rules of Hollywood. Rather than create a self-contained world that allowed the audience to escape into the story, Nichols, and the youthful film revolution he brought with him, celebrated ambiguity and ambivalence. This banner, in cornea-scorching fluorescent yellow, has one small tear, staining, a few pinholes, dirt smudges and crease marks across its long body. Posters for this title without the Academy Award notices are surprisingly rare and eagerly sought, especially the ones from the Embassy release as this one is. Fine+.
