The Ghoul (Gaumont, 1938 reissue). Three Sheet (41 X 8 The Ghoul (Gaumont, R-1938).
<B>The Ghoul (Gaumont, R-1938).</B></I> Three Sheet (41" X 81"). Boris Karloff, after a successful couple of years portraying monsters for Universal, returned to his native England to star in a horror picture about an Egyptologist who tries to become immortal. After an untimely death, the Egyptologist is buried in a tomb with a stolen jewel that the Professor believes will bring him back to life. When the jewel is stolen, he rises from the dead to exact his vengeance, in much the same way as The Mummy Im-ho-tep from the Universal picture. The picture was lost for many years, was one of the most sought after prints in the world and became the subject of both conjecture and "cult" like fascination. A heavily damaged print was located in Czechoslovakia and then a print in beautiful condition was found in the British Film Institute. NOTE: While we are listing this poster as a re-issue (attributed to 1938), we are doing so because this is the current prevailing theory. No one knows for sure that this poster is from a re-issue. The prevailing argument has been, why would Gaumont-British issue original posters for a film in green duo-tone when all of their other posters at that time were released in full color? That being said, the original 1933 British posters for The Ghoul were printed in dark green and black. So our logical question is, if they could print them in England in green duo-tone, why not the U.S. as well? Also, this poster does not have "re-issue" or "re-release" printed anywhere on it. Furthermore, no one has ever seen paper that is clearly marked as re-issue, much less as 1938 reissue and no one has a pressbook that would give a definitive answer. The bottom line is - no one knows for a fact that this poster is original or reissue. Could the original posters be "lost" in the same way the print was for so many years? Or are they lurking in some crypt... waiting to be found? This example of the three sheet has had quite a bit of restoration; mainly along the joints of all three sections of the poster and some in the borders and along the fold lines as well. This poster originally sold in May 1997 for $13,225.00. Very Good/Fine on Linen.
