The Ghost Breakers (Paramount, 1940). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Before Bob Hope partnered with Bing Crosby, Paramount pushed Hope to pair with Paulette Goddard, and after the success of "The Cat and the Canary" in 1939, they made this horror-comedy. Hope plays radio personality Lawrence L. Lawrence, who meets lovely heiress Mary Carter (Goddard) on a cruise out of New York. She has inherited a haunted mansion, and Lawrence vows to protect her by investigating the house on his own. He then encounters a zombie, a ghost and Anthony Quinn, all with trademark Bob Hope wit. ("The girls call me Pilgrim, because every time I dance with one I make a little progress.") To many collectors, this card -- with Noble Johnson's zombie menacing Paulette Goddard -- is considered the best of the set because it features the monster. This value is only enhanced by the card's well-maintained condition: several pinholes only occassionally infringe upon the image, and all of the abrasions are light, with minimal paper loss. Edges are sharp, and the corners round only slightly. Very Fine-.
