Issued in 1886 at Deadwood to Laura J. Browning for 250 shares at $10 each. The company was named after General George Crook, labeled the “greatest Indian fighter and manager the Army ever had” by General Sherman. In July 1875, Crook arrived in the Dakotas with military force for the purpose of expelling all persons found in the Black Hills without the consent and sanction of the U.S. Government. This included the miners. Most miners left the hills for a four month stretch but came back when no agreement was reached with the Indians (The Black Hills, or, The Last Hunting Ground of the Dakota's, Annie Tallent 1899). Crook spent most of the 1880’s in Arizona Territory on other Indian campaigns. Two small pinholes at the right. Uncancelled. EF.City: DeadwoodCounty: LawrenceState: SD
