For bidding is a rare historical book, "The First Battle" by William Jennings Bryan. This is an account of the leading events and issues of the 1896 presidential campaign with a description of the author’s tour, famous speeches, an analysis of the political situation of America and the election results, and a biographical sketch by Bryan’s wife. This edition includes over 50 illustrations of photographic portraits!

Bryan was an American orator and politician and beginning in 1896, he emerged as a dominant force in the Democratic Party, running three times as the party's nominee for President of the United States in the 1896, 1900, and the 1908 elections. He served in the House of Representatives from 1891 to 1895 and as the Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson. Because of his faith in the wisdom of the common people, he was often called "The Great Commoner".

In 1925, Bryan participated in the highly publicized Scopes Trial, which tested the Butler Act, a Tennessee law barring the teaching of evolution in public schools.
