Auction Details
On Saturday, Oct. 14, Jos. C. O’Neal & Sons Auctioneers & Appraisers will be holding an auction from the Estate of Former Delaware Governor Elbert N. Carvel and Mrs. Ann Valliant Carvel at the O’Neal Auction Center in Laurel, Delaware. This single-event will consist of the antiques, furniture, art pottery, Delaware art, political ephemera and memorabilia, as well as personal effects from the Carvel estate.
Among the many items to be offered include a Potthast, Baltimore, Maryland mahogany 10 piece dining room set and sideboard that is described on page 35 of Cecilia Cohen’s book “Only in Delaware”; a mahogany slant-front desk carved with the State Seal of Delaware, made for Gov. Carvel by Franklin Kinnamon and one of only three known to have been made; a Van Briggle Pottery collection; as well as paintings by Delaware artist Henry Progar & other Delaware artists. Also being offered are numerous items of political history that include important letters and telegrams from Presidents Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, and Clinton; signed and unsigned photographs of former Presidents; and over a half dozen scrapbooks put together by Mrs. Carvel that spans Gov. Carvel’s political career.
