The Earliest Known Satchel Paige Single Signed B
The Earliest Known Satchel Paige Single Signed Baseball, 1935. Intriguing and important relic is perhaps the only known surviving piece of memorabilia from the inaugural "Little World Series" of the National Baseball Congress, the brainchild of Wichita sporting goods salesman Hap Dumont to bring top level semi-pro baseball to the Midwest during the Depression. In order to assure the first Series would be a success, Dumont offered the exorbitant sum of $1,000 to Satchel Paige's Bismarck (ND) touring team, an offer gladly accepted by the eventual Champs. Paige would strike out sixty batters and win four games, each mark still standing as a tournament record to this day. The ball is artfully emblazoned with the the words, "First Little World's Series, Aug. 1935, Wichita, Kansas," with Paige signing the southern panel in his early "Satchell" double-L format, adding "Bismarck Ball Club" below. Paige's autograph and inscription survive at an impressive strength of 7/10. The ball exhibits a degree of toning and surface abrasions, but neither issue is of any noteworthy concern. An exceedingly scarce Negro League playing-days single for the advanced autograph collector. LOA from PSA/DNA.
