The Day the Earth Stood Still (20th Century Fox, 1951). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Science fiction forever changed when Klaatu descended to earth with a warning for mankind. Twenty years before Marshall McLuhan, the alien recognized that the medium is the message for this planet, so in order to impart the threat mankind poses to itself, he and his robot Gort must first threaten mankind. Robert Wise (an editor for Orson Welles who became a fine director in his own right) directs this classic that instilled within the genre a political subtext that reflected the anxieties of post-WWII America. Panic pervades the one sheet too, from the screams of Patricia Neal to the scattered masses below Gort's foot. The evocative imagery for the beloved film make this poster exceedingly popular with collectors, especially when it is so rarely found in condition this clean. Mounted on linen, though with no linen borders surrounding the paper, restoration has repaired a tear at the bottom, separation in the top crossfold and multiple pinholes. Very Fine.
