The Day the Earth Stood Still (20th Century Fox, 1951). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Director Robert Wise and screenwriter Edmund North injected postwar atomic-age anxiety into this film about an alien who threatens mankind to stop threatening itself. The film, deemed too left-wing by some censors, won a Golden Globe for "Best Film Promoting International Understanding." How many films were in competition for the award? Did the Hollywood Foreign Press Corps consider other well-intentioned films from that year like "Baby Sitters' Jitters," "Mr. Peek-a-Boo" or "Seasick Sailors?" And what film today would carry this sci-fi classic's moral torch? Nothing in 2005 promoted international understanding quite like "The Island," since nothing could be more internationally understood than that Michael Bay's mess must be the nadir of socially relevant science fiction, perfected by Wise and North 50 years ago. This lobby card shows Patricia Neal and her informant boyfriend, and it has multiple pinholes, folding in the bottom-left corner and tearing in two places on the left edge. However, it displays very well and promotes peace even better. Fine.
