The Color Purple (Moon Song) Production Screenplay
Moon Song/Color Purple Production Screenplay - No one would believe that Steven Spielberg could ever feel insecure about anything. however he did feel quite insecure about being director of "The Color Purple". He loved Alice Walker's best selling novel, but felt that he had little true understanding of the deep South, and really felt that a person of Color was more qualified to take the directing helm. It was only with the constant encouragement of producer Quincy Jones that he finally agreed. Since there was so much anticipation about Walker's novel being adapted to the screen, a "fake" production title was created, "Moon Song", so that during pre-production and production, no one knew what exactly Spielberg was directing. Of course this was also the screen debut for both Whoopi Goldberg (who Spielberg first saw in New York in her one-woman show and cast on the spot), and Oprah Winfrey. This is one of the very rare actual original production used scripts from Amblin Entertainment with the original title "Moon Song". It includes the security numbered code stamp (#CLY0076). also included is an Inter-Office Memo and additional revision pages. The script was used on-set by Tom McCown who was the set dresser and has an extensive credits including the "Back To The Future" films, "Rain Man" and "Scrooged".
