Extraordinary etching The Chess Players engraved by Jules Jacquet after the painting by leading French academic painter Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891). The text reads as follows: London, Published January 8, 1900, by L. H. Lefevre and Son, 1a. King Street, St. James S. W., Printed in Paris by A. Porcabeuf. The signature Meissonnier and year 1837 appear on the plate consistent with the year when the painting was exhibited in the Paris Salon. It is signed on the lower left Jules Jacquet and bears tiny initials HC on the left of the signature which stand for Hors d'Commerce, a French term for prints from an edition intended to be used as samples to show to dealers and galleries. In good used condition with minor signs of wear as shown. Please ask questions, request additional photos and shipping costs before buying.
