A wonderfully bizarre and unmistakably Seussical piece of screen history, this oversized “Cat” rug was custom-built for Mike Myers’ performance as the Cat in the 2003 live-action film The Cat in the Hat. Measuring an enormous 8 feet 5 inches long x 7 feet 7 inches wide, this full-body faux-fur rug was engineered with a hidden purpose: it allowed Myers to physically become a floor rug.
For filming, the production constructed an elevated stage floor so Myers could stand beneath the rug, pushing his head through the neck opening and his arms through concealed sleeves in the forelegs. The result is seen in the memorable deleted scene set in Safari Sam’s Television Store, where the Cat attempts to evade capture by posing as a taxidermy-style rug.
Crafted from dark faux fur and shaped into an exaggerated, cartoonish spread-out feline form, the piece remains instantly recognizable when compared to its on-screen appearance. A rare survivor from the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss filmmaking, this production-made hero rug is both absurd and iconic, perfect for collectors seeking a large, show-stopping display piece from one of the most imaginative sets ever put to film.
A delightfully strange artifact from Mike Myers’ transformation into the mischievous Cat, a true one-of-a-kind conversation piece from the world of Seuss.
