Gambs, E.F. THE CALIFORNIA PHILATELIST. San Francisco. No. 27 (1888-89). Small 8vo, self-covered. 40 pages; single-sheet Supplement affixed to front page of main work. Tear to first leaf; very good. A very rare and little-known publication with numismatic content among its philatelic coverage. The California Philatelist is a continuation of Gambs's earlier St. Louis Philatelist (which was first published in 1876). Moving to a part of the country virtually devoid of either philatelic or numismatic activity apparently did not deter Gambs, who proved a pioneer in both fields. While Gambs's publication is mostly given over to stamp coverage, interesting material on coins is sprinkled about. This issue includes J.G. Bingham's "Incidents in Coin Collecting."
