6" long. It is surprisingly difficult to find a good photo of the California Music Hall, which was variably known as the California Brewery, California Saloon, and the California Hotel. The original building was of wood frame construction built in 1877 and known as Loeber's Hall, after its owner Fred Loeber. According to a 1905 Butte Miner article, it served as a meeting hall, church, and erstwhile city hall. In 1881, it became known as a beer and concert hall and a workingman's club where beer and lunch could be had for two bits. The first Silver Bow County Democratic Convention was held in the hall in 1882, shortly after the county was formed. By then it was known as the California and was operated by Louis Leinemann and Charley Schmidt. Sanborn maps from 1888 and 1916 show the evolution of the property. On the 1888 map, the yellow indicates that the original building was one story wood frame construction. By 1916, it was replaced by a two-story brick building that was quite grand when it was built in 1905. The original building was torn down in June 1905 and the new one built and reopened as the California Music Hall in November of 1905. It operated as such until 1910. Sometime later, the building became home to the American Legion and the Board of Trade bar. Fire decimated the block in June 1969.
