The Bud Shrake Estate Auction

Auction Details

Burley Auction is proud to present the estate collection of legendary Texas author Edwin “Bud” Shrake. A collection full of all things Texas. Willie Nelson autographs & photos, Jerry Jeff Walker items, a fine collection Armadillo World Headquarters posters & Jim Franklin artwork. A collection full of relics from historic sporting events from Super Bowl III to Cassius Clay / Muhammad Ali prize fights, & golf memorabilia. Fantastic sports memorabilia & autographs collected by Bud as he covered the top sporting events of the 1960’s-70’s as a writer for Sports Illustrated. Original artworks from Leroy Neiman & others.

A Winchester 1886 rifle given to him as the screen writer for the Steve McQueen film, Tom Horn. Memorabilia & relics from “The Lion of Texas Letters” (as the Austin-American Statesman paper dubbed him). One of Texas’ most celebrated authors, & member of “Mad Dog Inc.” Bud had a front row seat to some of the most iconic events in the world (& Austin Texas) in the 1960’s-70’s.

Shrake was Texas Governor Ann Richards companion for 17 years, until her death in 2006. As the "first gentleman of Texas," he escorted Richards to her inaugural ball. To say Bud Shrake had an interesting life & career would be a huge understatement. This vast & varied collection will attest to that. Please make plans to join us Saturday April 20th at Burley Auction Gallery for a one of a kind estate auction of legendary Texas writer Edwin “Bud” Shrake.

PLUS! The lifelong poster collection of the artist Rick Turner. Over 150 of the best pieces from his personal collection. Rare & scarce Austin music posters & original art. "Rick Turner grew up in San Antonio, arrived in Austin late in 1968 and immediately immersed himself in the counter cultural psychedelic society that had already grown roots. After publishing a book of drawings entitled 'Austintatious,' Rick, along with Kerry Awn and Tommy (Tommy Bee) Bauman, received the seminal commission to paint the vendors’ 23rd street market mural. Although Rick contributed poster work for most of the major clubs, his focus at this time was airbrushed wall paintings and performing with the band Sons of Uranium Savages" - Austin Museum of Popular Culture. Rick happens to be in Austin the weeks prior to the auction & will be in attendance at that auction.
