The Book of Baseball - 1911--and A Vintage Minor League
The Book of Baseball - 1911--and A Vintage Minor League Uniform. The Book of Baseball: The National Game From the Earliest Days to the Present Season, Editied and Compiled by William Patten and J. Walker McSpadden. New York: P.F. Collier & Son, 1911. An early history of baseball, illustrated with hundreds of photographs and drawings. Folio, cloth-backed pictorial boards, which are rubbed and somewhat worn, with a small crack at lower right tip; 2 ½ in. tear in right margin of title page; minor soiling and wear. The frontispiece is from an original drawing of a "Gibson Girl" at a game with her family. Among the illustrations is an 1866 print of an Atlantic-Athletic game in progress, one of the earliest photographs of Joe Jackson in uniform. The game's origins, which do not include Abner Doubleday, are discussed and a chronological survey is given, up through a detailed preview of the 1911 major and minor league season. There are playing tips from star players and articles on "Making a Championship Club" and "The Troubles of an Umpire." Dead Ball Era enthusiasts will want this book. Grobani 6-10.

Jersey, pants, and cap are made of gray wool with blue pinstripes, size 40, by GoldSmith, Cincinnati, Ohio. Stained and obviously much used but intact. Caps are rarely found with vintage uniforms.
