The BeatlesYesterday and TodayThird State Peeled Stereo "Butcher Cover" Album Plus Trunk Paste Over Slick(Capitol ST2553, 1966).How often do you see this? A wonderful example of one of the most desirable and collectible albums of all time.
The pasteover "Trunk Cover" has been peeled to reveal the censored "Butcher Cover." The peeling process is laborious and can result in a barely-presentable album cover. Not the case here. This is one of the nicer Third State covers we've seen. Plus you will receive the actual "Trunk Cover" slick. Note: The added slick is almost always destroyed upon peeling.

The original cover for the Yesterday and Todayalbum caused such a stir before hitting retail markets that virtually all copies were pulled before the public could purchase one at retail outlets. The album was released in the US in 1966, in-between Rubber Souland Revolver.Capitol Records, to save money, added another image the "Trunk Cover" over the existing "Butcher Cover" albums that were not destroyed.

The (in)famous "butcher" photo was taken early in 1966 by Robert Whitaker and actually had a title: "A Somnambulant Adventure." Whether or not it was a Vietnam protest or a protest against Capitol "butchering" their records, the fact is that it became the official album cover. When first seen by DJs and record stores, there was an immediate and negative reaction to its graphic nature. Capitol recalled all the "offensive" albums and, in many cases, glued what's generally called the "Trunk Cover" over it (known as a "Second State"). Fans started peeling the trunk cover which would reveal the original image. This was then called a third state.

It has been estimated that mono was produced in a ten to one ration over the stereo version. There were certainly fewer of these that found their way into collections.

This copy was produced in Los Angeles, California. Another way to tell is the word "Stereo" on the label. The "0" is round on the East Coast pressings. On the West Coast pressings the "0" is more of an oval shape. The factory number #5 is found on the back bottom right corner of the cover. Only 25% of all Beatles records pressed by Capitol were manufactured at the West Coast pressing plant, making this particular record Very Rare. Also includes original inner sleeve dust jacket and a copy of the recall letter.

This is a one-off opportunity to add this spectacular example to the collection! Condition: Jacket EX-7 / Disc NM/ Trunk cover slick GD-3. LOA from Beatles Authority Gary M. Hein of Hein's Rare Collectibles and COA from Heritage Auctions.
