The Battle for Atlanta. Return form o
The Battle for Atlanta. "Return" form of Capt. J.A. Cockerill, for Ohio Light Artillery, Co. D, July 31, 1864, a review of this precarious month in Sherman's March. Probably part of the Army of the Ohio, 23rd Corps under Gen. Schofield, the Captain lists on the 10 x 16" partly printed form all commissioned officers, number of enlisted men, seven captured, two dead, sergeant wounded, absentees and reasons, those missing, horses serviceable, number of field artillery. July was the month of the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, the death of Gen. McPherson, Gen. Hood's "Second Sortie," and the Union still holding Atlanta. There was yet another month of bloody fighting ahead before Union troops entered Atlanta. Ink somewhat light but legible, light soiling and wrinkling. Historic evidence from one of the War's decisive battlegrounds.
