American Numismatic Society. THE ALGERNON SYDNEY SULLIVAN MEDAL. WITH A MEMOIR AND TRIBUTES. ARRANGED BY GUSTAV KOBBÉ. New York: ANS, 1911. 12mo, original blue cloth, gilt; top page edges gilt. (2), 71, (7) pages; fine frontispiece portrait; 5 additional plates; original bronze plaquette inserted in a cardboard frame and bound in, as issued. Fine. Very scarce. The Sullivan medal, or plaquette, was designed by Jules Édouard Roiné in 1908. It was issued by the American Numismatic Society, successor to the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Memorial Committee, "in commendation of excellence of character, conduct and attainments, and to encourage in others the humane and noble use of their abilities, so conspicuous in the life of Mr. Sullivan... It is awarded each year to the five persons who stand highest in their examinations in the City of New York for admission to the Bar of the State of New York." The plans for the award did not come to fruition, and the ANS retained forty examples until recent years. They were eventually sold under the auspices of the ANS Standing Committee on Medals and Decorations, chaired by Margo Russell, from whose collection this comes.
