Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge. CATALOGUE OF THE VALUABLE AND EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF ENGLISH, AMERICAN, EUROPEAN & OTHER FOREIGN COINS, MEDALS, TOKENS &C. FORMED BY THE LATE BRUCE CARTWRIGHT, ESQ. London, June 20-28 1907. Small 4to, contemporary brown cloth and mottled boards; hand-numbered taped spine label. vi, 145, (1) pages; 1256 lots; 13 fine plates; interleaved throughout and annotated. Very good. The Amsterdam Schulman firm's annotated copy of this notable catalogue, clearly intended to be their reference copy at the sale, but, for unknown reasons, apparently not so employed there. Included in the text are numerous references to prices, sometimes over half a dozen in number, for similar pieces sold in other major sales of the era. Also included are initials after a number of lots, possibly indicating commissions. A great deal of time was spent entering the various price records and, even today, the comparisons may prove useful, particularly in the case of the scarcer pieces. The sale featured rare American private gold coin issues, a number of which are depicted on the fine plate largely devoted to them. Ex the June 6-7, 1968 Hans Schulman sale, lot 829. Ex Harry W. Bass, Jr. library, with his bookplate (Kolbe Sale 78, lot 457).
