United States Government. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, COMMUNICATING, IN OBEDIENCE TO LAW, THE REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE MINT FOR THE PAST YEAR. (Washington), Feb. 5, 1857. 8vo, self-covered. 19, (1) pages. Removed from previous binding. Near fine. A rather more substantive report, transmitted to Congress via President Pierce by Mint Director James Ross Snowden. The three Southern Mints have been joined by San Francisco as a fourth branch mint, and the activities of the Assay Office at New York are also reported upon. The degree to which times had changed is best illustrate by the fact that the amount of gold of domestic production deposited at all of the minting establishments was $47,878,411.81, of which $47,509,411.08 came from California. Rare.
