HUBERTUS GOLTZIUS HERBIPOLITA VENLONIANUS DEDICAVIT. Brugis Flandrorum, 1566. First edition. Folio text block [29.5 by 22 cm], disbound, retaining orginal sewn bands and vellum manuscript reinforcement. Superbly engraved historiated, architectural title; (22), 288, (32) pages [lacking printed title and final six leaves], including 234 engraved plates, largely depicting ancient coins. Engraved title worn and chipped at extremities; good. The first edition of Goltz’s pioneering work on the coins of the Roman Republic, and only the second book to be printed at his private press. It was the earliest substantial work to organize the documentation for the early fasti of Rome. Dekesel notes (1988), that Golzius “was granted an official Roman citizenship on May 7th 1567” for this work on Roman feasts. His first book, Icones imperatorum, was published in 1557 at age 21. He subsequently traveled through Germany, France and Italy, examining collections of antiquities to advance his research.
