HERBIPOLITA VENLONIANO AUCTORE ET SCULPTORE. Brugis Flandorum, 1563. First edition. Folio [33 by 24 cm], contemporary vellum over boards; rebacked at one time with hymnal vellum. Superbly engraved historiated title, followed by 16 printed leaves; lvii, (1) pages, including 54 full-page engraved plates of ancient Roman coins within a border on a dark ground (several plates blank as issued); 3 printed leaves; 231, (41) pages; woodcut initials. Binding very worn; engraved title loose and a trifle chipped at edges; lacking the last eight pages of text. A noted Dutch scholar and engraver, Hubert Goltz was a major influence in the early evolution of numismatics. Of the title at hand, Christian Dekesel writes, in Hubertus Goltzius, the Father of Ancient Numismatics (1988): “His second major numismatic book, and at the same time his first Bruges work about the Roman coins of Julius Caesar, was published in September 1563. It is a folio edition with a marvelous classical and allegorical frontispiece and numerous coin plates.” [Online description truncated: see printed or PDF catalogue for full description.]
